Ek Balam Tour from Cancun with Happy Tours Cancun: Super Yucatan Adventure
I recently took the Ek Balam tour from Cancun with Happy Tours Cancun and I am here to
tell you all about it! This is one of my fave excursions, as a local Cancunense I’ve done all the Mayan ruins tours
but this one holds a special place in my heart. It’s just. Special. An Ek Balam Mayan ruins tour brings you on an
intimate encounter with the Mayan world, a very different vibe than at some of the larger, more popular tours of
ancient cities in Yucatan. This tour is also full of adventure and surprises in the jungle. Are you ready? Let’s go.
What to expect on a Mayan ruins tour from Cancun to Ek Balam?
I made my way to the meeting point and found my spot in the comfortable air conditioned
van. I like to sit near the front so I can hear every little thing the guide is telling us! The trip from Cancun to
Ek Balam takes a couple of hours and our expert guide shared lots of fascinating facts and folklore about the Mayan
world on the way. I always love tales of the Alux, the mischievous tale from folklore that demands offerings in the
jungle.
We arrived at Ek Balam, a magical Mayan ruins site in the wilds of Yucatan. This may be
one of the less visited sites but that is part of the appeal of course.Throughout the day I enjoyed the superb
attention of guide Arturo, he was really knowledgeable and had a kind way of explaining some of the more complicated
concepts of the ancient Maya. I asked a lot of questions about Ek Balam and he always knew the answers. We enjoyed a
really great guided tour of Ek Balam and of course, climbing the Acropolis to see the magnificent frieze art is
always breathtaking. In small groups like this you can get some fantastic photos.
Yucatan zipline and cenote rappel adventure! YAS! LOVE extreme adventure tours from Cancun!
After the inspiring immersion in culture and history at Ek Balam, it’s time for some
extreme fun and adventure. We head to Native Park Yucatan and find an incredible cenote waiting for us! Cenotes are
natural limestone sinkholes with mineral-rich waters and unbelievable structures of stalactites and stalagmites
developed over thousands of years. They hide under the Yucatan jungle and many have not been explored yet. They
estimate there are about 10000 cenotes hiding in the jungle of the Mexican Caribbean!
At Native Park Yucatan we do a little jungle ziplining over the canopy and a
heart-stopping rappel into the huge cenote. Swimming in the crystalline waters is refreshing. Ok, kinda cold,
but you get used to it and it is worth it! We play in the cenote for a while, splashing, jumping from the
landings and having a few laughs on the “trepachanga”. We enjoy a delicious lunch buffet of Yucatan specialties
and it was AMAZING. I went back for seconds and thirds. You must try the cochinita pibil and at least dare to
sample the local spicy habanero salsa. The handmade tortillas are simply delicious, do not miss out. I’d like to
tell you about the return trip to Cancun but I promptly fell asleep and enjoyed a delicious nap, ha! Extreme
adventure and a full belly knocked me out.
Pro Ek Balam tour tip: Dress comfortably, maybe with your bathing suit underneath
shorts and a tshirt, bring a change of clothes and a sweater or jacket for the air-conditioned ride. Hats or
caps are essential for the heat of the sun. Bring a bag or backpack with a zipper closure to make sure none of
your belongings go astray as you roam. Running shoes or sports shoes are best, lots of walking and extreme
adventures ahead!
